The Chinese government is committed to promoting multilateral and bilateral cooperation and exchanges in the use of nuclear energy and the development of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Since joining the IAEA in 1984, China has acceded to a number of international conventions, including the Regional Co-operative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology, Convention on Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency, Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident, Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and its Amendment, Convention on Nuclear Safety, International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, and the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management (Joint Convention), and fulfilled the obligations under these conventions. It has carried out cooperation and exchanges with the international organizations such as IAEA in the development of nuclear energy, nuclear science and technology, nuclear safety and security, and emergency preparedness and response. As of December 2020, China had signed intergovernmental cooperation agreements with 28 countries on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, carried out various forms of cooperative activities with developed countries in nuclear energy, and provided assistance to other developing countries to the best of its abilities.
